Thoroughbred Racing Season Opens at Del Mar, California |

Good news for thoroughbred racing fans living in California and the desert southwest: Del Mar opens July 16. This race track is in a beautiful beach city, and is a popular spot for residents and tourists alike. It used to be known as a party spot, but there is really serious horse racing going on there. They have the thoroughbred racing horses' safety in mind: they installed a new race track surface called Polytrack, which is proving itself to be a safer surface for horses, even though injuries and the unfortunate euthanasia still occur on this surface. It's so sad to watch these magnificent horses hurt themselves, but thoroughbred racing has inherent dangers in it that no track surface can ever completely prevent.
The good news is that the accident rate is down using this surface, and there is another spot of good news at Del Mar: they are going to keep their prices at last season's levels, and expand their happy hour and senior specials so that everyone who wants to watch thoroughbred racing will be able to. |
