thoroughbred racing, The Grand NationalWhen somebody mentions thoroughbred racing I automatically think of the British Grand National. The Grand National is the biggest betting race in the world and is popular even with those who do not usually follow thoroughbred racing. The British Grand National thoroughbred racing event takes place at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, England. The Grand National is a Grade 3 handicap chase.
This thoroughbred racing event is extremely controversial. As a child, I could not bear to watch the Grand National on television because I read about horses that died because of injuries sustained while competing in the event. Animal rights groups have struggled to have the Grand National banned. One rider has also died from head injuries suffered during the Grand National.
I agree with the animal rights activists who want the British Grand National thoroughbred racing event prohibited. The thought that some horses break their necks and die during this event is greatly disturbing to me. Why should innocent animals suffer just for the entertainment of humans? I think that the British Grand National thoroughbred racing event is barbaric.
