thoroughbred racing, horse racing tracksThe thoroughbred racing season is beginning this week with the first races of the season. The first one, the $150,000 Transylvania race, will be held in Keeneland, KY. The weather for this race is supposed to be cold and rainy, not atypical for April. The horse racing tracks will undoubtedly be more difficult for the horses to race on, but as summer approaches and the spring rains slow, the 2008 thoroughbred racing season should be a very interesting one to watch. The Kentucky Derby will be held on May 3, and it is the first of the Triple Crown races in this country. There has not been a Triple Crown winner since 1978, so maybe 30 years after that last phenomenal feat by Affirmed, there will be a horse capable of it this season. According to the website, thoroughbred champions.com, these are the top thoroughbred racing horses this season:

1. Pyro (1)
2. Denis Of Cork (2)
3. Cool Coal Man (3)
4. Colonel John (4)
5. Big Brown (new)
6. Smooth Air (new)
7. El Gato Malo (7)
8. Court Vision (8)
9. War Pass (9)
10. Eight Belles (10)

With the season opening tomorrow, it will be great fun to watch these top contenders compete their way to the Triple Crown, and we all certainly hope one of them takes home the great honor this year.
